Premier in Pitapat Theatre’s studio in Kampung Bahang, Penampang, Sabah.
“Shade” is a short play created by Zizi Hau (Hau Guei Sze) which performed under the
Pitapat Theatre’s “Theatre in Kampung” project (2016). The play explores the journey of a
young woman in seeking of her path under the influence of the traditional values and the
frame of the society.
Actor and Creator: Zizi Hau (Hau Guei Sze)
Guei Sze (a.k.a. Zizi) from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, found her passion
for theatre at the very first drama lesson she received in secondary school. In 2013, Zizi
trained and performed under Pitapat Theatre (Sabah). She then furthered her studies in
Taiwan from 2014 to 2015 in performance and theatre.
Zizi has worked extensively with Pitapat Theatre, appearing in various productions such as
The Wanted (2013), An Enemy of the People.At the Moment (2015 & 2016), Theatre in
Kampung-Island Shade (2016), and Kakak (2017). An Enemy of the People.At the
Moment toured to Damansara Performing Arts Centre, Kuala Lumpur (2016). Kakak was
performed in Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and Black Box KK, Sabah, and later
toured to Tua-Tiu-Tiann International Festival of Arts, Taipei (2017). In 2018, Zizi’s
performance in Kakak won her an award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 15th Asli
Drama Awards. In Singapore, she has performed in The Moonlit Smile at the
Esplanade Moonfest (2016) and Speak Cryptic’s The Tribe as part of Club Malam at
SIFA O.P.E.N. 2016.
After ITI, Zizi plans to continue her practice, exploring the intricacies of voice production
and character work. And she also continues her works with Pitapat Theatre’s new
exploration in online theatre production — THE ROOM, which premiered in May 2021
Artistic Director: Seng Soo Ming
Seng Soo Ming is an actor, director and theatre educator based in Seremban, N.Sembilan.
After graduating from the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), he collaborated with
acclaimed Taiwanese director, Stan Lai in his play, The Village (2008), which toured the
US, China, Singapore and Taiwan with over 200 performances. He is also a member of
Traditions and Edition Theatre Circus (an international theatre company formed by the
graduates of ITI from different countries).
In 2012, Soo Ming founded PITaPAT Theatre in Kota Kinabalu (which moved its base to
Seremban in 2019), as a base to develop theatre arts in Sabah and discover methods of
theatre creation that combine traditional theatre elements with contemporary theatre
methods – an approach and response to the training gleaned from ITI
Soo Ming’s recent works includes Merah, An Enemy Of The People. At the Moment (2015
& 2016), KAKAK (2016, 2017), One Hundred Days of Solitude and The Room. Kakak has
also been performed in Taipei in Tua-Tiu-Tian International Festival of Arts (TTTIFA) and
International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFOK) in India. He won Best Director (2017) and
Best Actor (2018) in Malaysia’s 14th & 15th ADA Drama Awards.
PITAPAT THEATRE
PITaPAT Theatre was formed in 2012 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, then moved to Seremban
in 2019. Our aim is to undertake relevant, accessible and contemporary theatrical
projects which explore the multicultural Malaysian community to increase consciousness
of the social issues. Our main objective is to increase the participation of people from our
multi-ethnic Malaysia in all aspects of professional theatrical training and intensive drama
workshops
