January Low, born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia started dancing with classical ballet, followed by 25 years of Indian classical dance training in Sutra Dance Theatre, Malaysia, focusing on Odissi. She returned to the stage a year after the birth of her twins, with works such as bloom (2016) which she performed when she was seven months pregnant, dedicated (2017), MI(X)G (2018) and reclaim (2019). www.januarylow.com Odissi, one of eight ancient classical dance forms, originated in the Hindu temples of Odisha – an eastern coastal state of India. Odissi, in its history, was performed predominantly by women (maharis) and expressed religious stories and spiritual ideas, particularly of Vaishnavism (Vishnu as Jagannath), but also of other traditions such as those related to Hindu gods Shiva and Surya, as well as Hindu goddesses (Shaktism)
